Title: Coronavirus general
Post by: rachel on March 14, 2020, 10:03:37 am
Hey, how's it going y'all? The pandemic is in full swing. Respirators and face masks have been sold out since February. K-12 schools across the US are closed for up to a month. Kate's college cancelled their spring / summer semester and told everyone to go home. Work trips, sporting events, and anime conventions all cancelled. The economy is falling hard. Grocery store shelves are empty as everyone stocks up for the zombie movie apocalypse we all grew up with.
I think it's cool that suddenly it's socially acceptable to stay inside and not talk to anyone except on the internet

work has told us to "work from home" except for service calls, which means i will be infecting crews that have been at sea and isolated for at least a month
also the point of containment has already been passed. international level briefings say to prepare for 480million dead.

So it looks like the CDC took note to the fact that everyone in the world was searching for "coronavirus map" and decided to make their own for the US.

A few people have talked about the risk of reinfection since people have allegedly tested negative and gotten sick again, but false negatives are quite common since the disease is so new.
https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus
Quote
Some people require more than one test because of false-negative outcomes
The number of COVID-19 tests carried out will be similar to the number of people tested, but they won’t be quite the same, because some people may need to be tested multiple times. The reason for this is that there are “false-negative” test outcomes
Quote
There are several reasons why someone infected with COVID-19 may produce a false-negative result when tested:
They may be in the early stage of the disease with a viral load that is too low to be detected. They may have no major respiratory symptoms, so there could be little detectable virus in the patient’s throat and nose. There may have been a problem with sample collection, meaning there was very little sample to test. There may have been poor handling and shipping of samples and test materials. There may have been technical issues inherent in the test, e.g. virus mutation.
The WHO suggests that these issues should be taken into account and that for some people, tests should be carried out several times.
But some people infected a bunch of monkeys and they weren't able to reinfect them. So maybe we're safe, lol

The hockey stick isn't quite as steep today. The total number of new cases every day is still increasing, but not quite as fast as the past few days. Let's see if this trend continues.

Using a home made face mask is not as effective as using an actual surgical mask, but it is still better than wearing nothing.
Quote
A protective mask may reduce the likelihood of infection, but it will not eliminate the risk, particularly when a disease has more than 1 route of transmission. Thus any mask, no matter how efficient at filtration or how good the seal, will have minimal effect if it is not used in conjunction with other preventative measures, such as isolation of infected cases, immunization, good respiratory etiquette, and regular hand hygiene. An improvised face mask should be viewed as the last possible alternative if a supply of commercial face masks is not available, irrespective of the disease against which it may be required for protection.

all public schools have closed in most places in the US. seniors are butthurt they're not getting a prom. any more than ten people in an area is banned. take out food is still open.
if i knew how to disinfect my truck i'd do so regularly. all the diseases i've been trained to handle, traveled in dirt and the important thing was to spray down the wheels with goop and wear covers on shoes. this stuff? no idea. i can't get a micron mask to wear.

In COVID-19, "50-75% of 3000 positive cases in Vo, Italy were asymptomatic according to Professor Sergio Romagnani. Risk of exposure grows exponentially as noted through actual exposures (charted internationally) N95 masks are warranted and remain the standard of care.
Can N95 masks be autoclaved or sterilized by other means for safe reuse?
To be useful a decontamination method must eliminate the viral threat, be harmless to end-users, and retain respirator integrity. 4C Air confirmed all the proposed treatments have killed corona viruses. Labs have no way to test COVID-19 directly and as an accepted protocol, E. Coli is used for testing. We asked what methods can be used to decontaminate the facial mask for reuse safely and without loss to filtration efficiency. 4C Air confirms using 70 degree C hot air in an oven (typical kitchen-type of oven will do) for 30min, or hot water vapor are additional effective decontamination methods.
Conclusions: DO NOT use alcohol and chlorine-based disinfection methods. These will remove the static charge in the microfibers in N95 facial masks, reducing filtration efficiency. In addition, chlorine also retains gas after de-contamination and these fumes may be harmful.

Well yeah, there hasn't been enough time for the places that have instituted lockdowns to show those results. I'm kind of skeptical of the efficacy of the lockdowns in general because of all the essential businesses. Turns out, they employ a lot of people, and when everyone can still go to the grocery store it's not going to do that much to slow down the curve. And is everyone supposed to stay locked down for a year and a half until we get vaccines or acquire herd immunity? That's an insane course of action.

Stephers was talking about this last night (from her own personal experience) and today it's in the news.
Coronavirus pandemic could inflict emotional trauma and PTSD on an unprecedented scale, scientists warn (https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/27/coronavirus-pandemic-could-inflict-long-lasting-emotional-trauma-ptsd.html)
Quote
“The scale of this outbreak as a traumatic event is almost beyond comprehension,” said Yuval Neria, the director of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder at the New York State Psychiatric Institute and a professor of psychology at Columbia University Medical Center.
Neria, seeking a precedent to point to, said that not even the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks or World War II were adequate comparisons, as the anxiety those events caused was at least limited by geography. In this case, he said, “there are no boundaries.”
Maybe we'll actually start taking healthcare and mental health problems seriously in the US now? Yeah... we can dream.

This is a pretty cool site that plots the total number of cases vs number of new cases per day on a logarithmic scale, which turns into a straight line for countries that are undergoing exponential growth and deviates from the line once the curve is flattened

For the first time in weeks the number of new detected infections in the US has gone down. Is this a sign the curve is starting to flatten or just a single day anomaly? Under reporting because of the weekend? Social distancing finally starting to pay off? What do you think?

some major industrial plants are closing down, so net grid demand is dropping, so some power plants will shut down.
apparently.
i don't have hard sources or numbers for any of this and i'm too lazy to investigate its just guys sitting around talking about if we're gonna get laid off.

ah so these are New Models, not the Old Models that said "2.5 million people are going to die unless every waitress and retail worker is on the verge of homelessness"
Using influenza surveillance networks to estimate state-specific prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in the United States
Detection of SARS-CoV-2 infections to date has relied heavily on RT-PCR testing. However, limited test availability, high false-negative rates, and the existence of asymptomatic or sub-clinical infections have resulted in an under-counting of the true prevalence of SARS-CoV-2.
Study suggests 80% of Covid-19 cases in the US went undetected in March
"The findings support a scenario where more than 8.7 million new SARS-CoV-2 infections appeared in the U.S. during March and estimate that more than 80% of these cases remained unidentified as the outbreak rapidly spread," Justin Silverman of Penn State University, Alex Washburne of Montana State University and colleagues at Cornell University and elsewhere, wrote.
So yea the lockdown actually did make a huge impact on the spread of the virus but we didn't (and still don't) have the capacity to properly test for it

From QZ "20 questions to ask instead of how are you doing"
* How are you taking care of yourself today? * What part of your shelter-in-place residence have you come to appreciate the most? * What surprising thing have you been stocking up on (that isn’t toilet paper)? * What’s a story – from a book, a movie, an article, a conversation – that you’ve been gripped by recently? Why did it capture you? * What habit have you started, or broken, during the quarantine? * Which specific place in your neighborhood are you most looking forward to visiting once this is all over? * What’s the easiest part about the quarantine? * What are some things you have realized that you don’t really need? * What’s something you own that feels useful? * What is your Covid-19 nickname/alter-ego? * What problem—either yours, or something more global —do you wish you could solve?
* What’s something that you miss that surprises you? What’s something that you don’t miss that surprises you? * Which member of your family/ friend group have you been thinking about the most during this time? Why? * What’s the most generous act you’ve seen recently? * What’s the last thing you experienced that made you laugh, or cry? * What times of the day or the week are hardest? * What’s giving you hope right now? * What’s the best thing that happened to you today? * How do you want this experience to change you? How do you think it will? * What do you hope we all learn or take away from this experience?

They are going to have more cases than Brazil in the next couple days and more cases than the US within a couple weeks if this keeps up

In other news, America's coronavirus cases continue dropping. There were only 21,000 new infections recorded on Sunday the 16th which is the lowest number of new infections we've had since June last year. At the rate we're going, in a couple weeks we will be down to the number of daily cases we were getting at the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020.
Over 40% of people in Colorado have already received both vaccinations and it's looking like we are on track to be 85% vaccinated by Thanksgiving 2021.
Unfortunately many other states are not getting vaccinated, especially in the south. At the current rate of vaccination in Mississippi, they will not reach 85% vaccinated until December 2022.
