Title: Robots are pretty cool
Post by: rachel on August 16, 2017, 12:14:15 am
I like robots, automation has provided humans with abundance for generations. In the future, I think it'll be important that individuals have access to automation, otherwise it could just become another tool for the rich to enslave the poor.
Anyway, this video is pretty cool, it's a robot that picks apples... BY SUCKING THEM!

Why do you believe it is important for individuals to have access to automation?
My access to an assembly line in Detroit doesn't inhibit my ability to buy a car, and the robots that built the car (sorry Detroit workers) cost alot more than the car itself

As automation continues to replace human labor, it will inevitably reach a point where most jobs will be done by robots with humans left nothing to do. The poor could starve, abandoned by the machines which only provide abundance for their corporate creators. Or maybe a totalitarian government could offer the paradise provided by automation in exchange for conformity. By imagining a future where individuals and communities can provide for themselves through automation, we ensure that abundance can reach everyone.
In other news, robots are pretty cool.

I found this quote from an article about Brain-Machine Interfaces, but I think the idea behind it could easily be applied to automation as well.
Quote
If we have to have magic wands on Earth, Elon thinks, let?s at least make sure they?re in the hands of a large number of people across the world?not one all-powerful sorcerer. Or as he puts it:
Essentially, if everyone?s from planet Krypton, that?s great. But if only one of them is Superman and Superman also has the personality of Hitler, then we?ve got a problem.
More broadly, a single pioneer?s magic wand would likely have been built to serve that inventor?s own needs and purposes. But by turning the future magic wand industry into a collective effort, a wide variety of needs and purposes will have a wand made for them, making it more likely that the capabilities of the world?s aggregate mass of magic wands will overarchingly represent the needs of the masses.
You know, like democracy.

Everyone already has their own magic wand in their pocket. It's called a smartphone. They contain access to nearly every bit of knowledge mankind has ever recorded, but we mostly use them to send dick pics or look at funny pictures or whatever.
If everyone had their own android servant, they would be more likely to try to fuck it than they would to have it farm apples in their backyard.

okay so technology provides LEVERAGE
the best example of this is war technology: now a spindly shitty nerd can buy a GUN and kill 30 people. Technology!!
Technology doesn't solve social problems. The scale of the problems just gets magnified. Remember the USSR's "planned economy" and how terribly that went? That shit was cutting edge at the time.

This guy at DEFCON was annoyed by his neighbor's kid flying a drone around his house... so he came up with some creative ways to disable with the drone while it was flying. Forcing it to land, returning it to home, etc.
Apparently it's even running an FTP server. ...A flying FTP server...

man i fuckin wish we'd move to a post scarcity CULTURE, and we already have the TECHNOLOGY to do so, but as long as there are greedy assholes, we won't have this.

I've always wanted a robot to scan everything in a grocery store and tell me where to go. I hate walking around aimlessly looking for things.

we could be a post scarcity civ right fucking now.

The greedy asshole factor has been a problem since the beginning of history and depending on who you talk to, since the dawn of humankind. But maybe it begins when life began and greedy assholes aren't a product of poor moral choices, but of evolution. That said, I believe that a percentage of human beings will always be assholes and that the real technological challenge is how do we deal with them.

If we had the technology to grow our own food, collect water, and provide shelter for everybody on the planet sustainably and in abundance, why does it matter if there are greedy assholes?

Well, I think we've had all that for hundreds if not thousands of years. But assholes, driven by the anomalous moral dynamics of their aberrant biology leverage the surplus towards their own ends, to the detriment to everyone else.
In fact, there are perfectly non-asshole scenarios where a minority can gain economic leverage over the majority (I can do some research on the matter if anyone wants, I'm just not awake enough to give the argument a fair hearing).
Though, to be fair, you've suggested some technological solutions (AI/blockchain/etc) where the surplus could be managed to prevent conflict and domination.

A video with examples of AIs trying to cheat at various tasks. For example, instead of playing a video game and racing to the finish, the AI just picks up powerups over and over because you get more points that way.

Wow how did this happen in 2016 and I am just hearing about it now???
A trained military sniper started killing cops, killing 5 and wounding 14.
So they duct taped a bomb to one of their police bomb diffusing robots to kill him in a kamikaze mission. Very dishonorable death. Klingons would not approve

its unlike the police to actually take direct action against a mass shooter, i guess blue lives really do matter

This guy is working on his own open source quadrupedal robot, like boston dynamics' "BigDog"
Here's a random one of his videos that shows off the dog's ability to balance and move around on its feet but also talks about some of the hardware and software issues that he is working on fixing:
i love those fights but i don't know what to search to find them
do we have those in the US yet?
"Robot sumo" or "japanese robot competition" are pretty good search phrases

Einride, the Swedish autonomous trucking startup, unveiled a new vehicle type that the company hopes to have on the road delivering freight starting in 2021. The vehicles, dubbed Autonomous Electric Transport (AET), came in four different variations. And much like Einride’s previous prototypes, they come without steering wheels, pedals, windshields, and, in general, no cab at all. (https://0x0.st/iGmq.jpg)

those would be fine if they had a big ass remote to drive it with, as long as the truck can get itself to docks & loading bays and the workers can manually steer it the last few thousand feet.

maybe the docks need to be retrofitted with giant QR codes

i think even if you LIDAR mapped every dock, a machine wouldn't be able to navigate most of them. not even accounting for loads/trailers getting left in the middle of spaces that are usually empty, there's just a ton of maneuvering that's done with implicit communication, flashed headlights, eye contact. sometimes even if the dock were completely empty and the driverless truck were the only one there, it still wouldn't be able to navigate it. a lot of docks are really weird.
now for standardized big box stores where the loading dock is almost exactly the same in each one -- maybe? but they still stash a lot of pallets outside.

This guy made an autonomous solar powered rover with an arduino and 3d printed gears that drives around in a field uninterupted for weeks at a time
After driving in a figure 8 shape in a field for a month or two the gears ended up getting clogged with grass residue and he had to disassemble it. Upon disassembly he found mycelium growing in the crushed grass between the gears.
Life... uh... finds a way
