Title: Rednecks vs Robots
Post by: rachel on November 05, 2020, 09:52:28 pm
Ozmiander sent me more pics of the land today and I am furious. The ATV riding mouth breathing rednecks have continued trespassing on the wetfish nature preserve and even tore up some of the posts we put in the trails to keep them away.

Time to build some robots with tank treads and paintball guns. Actually, seed pellets. Every shot plants native species. Hell yeah

Anyway, look at this shit.

BEFORE

I guess we need to use more quickrete next time.

the rednecks live closer to the posts than you do. at this point they probably see it as a game and are excited to see your next move. already one of them has predicted your quickrete move, and are considering bringing in a tractor to pull them out. another redneck thinks that's too much work and wants to just cut them off at ground level with a saw, but the first redneck is a stubborn craftsman who believes in seeing a job out to its end.

you're trying to solve a social obstacle with technology, and you're up against rednecks. technology doesn't really work on rednecks.

have you tried talking to them?

That's what the robots are for. They will be mounted with a speaker connected to mumble

For the record, there already was quickrete on those posts, but I guess not enough to get a good grip.

Maybe next time we should hammer some nails into the bottom of the post before pouring. That should give it a good grip, right?

Put up a sign and a hidden camera, file a police report when they trespass again.

Good idea.

It was one of the first things we did last month.

Maybe some day we'll have some usable footage from the trail cams we set up. Right now all we have are a couple pictures of birds. Which, to be fair, is our actual mission as a nature conservancy.

We should probably get some more cameras... And a drone. And an RC boat

I'm thinking some ditches specifically designed to cause the ATVs to go high center should be pretty effective.

Put a few bumps / ditches like that in a row and I think they'll get stuck. If it was just one they could go fast to jump over it, but a few in a row should force them to slow down and get stuck.

The government says we're not allowed to leave nails or spike strips on the property, so yes, we filed a police report to establish an independent record of the vandalism.

Obviously I don't expect the police to do much, hence the premise of this thread. Making robots to yell at the rednecks is the long term solution here.

Not sure what point you're trying to make exactly

Update: I got a couple of my old highschool friends who still live in NY to go to the land and clean up trash. They live about 10 minutes away from the property. I am paying for their time as well as the trash removal fees at the dump.

They were at the land Friday and Saturday. While they were there they saw people on dirt bikes, ATVs, and even a golf cart. Most people turned around as soon as they saw them on the property, but they managed to talk to a couple of them and tell them they aren't allowed to be there.

Yay! Cleaning crew

The fire pit was already there,  we put up a fence around it so people would stop going there to burn things. There were debris from burnt garbage, at least one couch / mattress, and I even found a picture of the pope???

All of the bottles and cans were consolidated there by the cleaning crew. All of that stuff was spread out across the whole property and they are going to take it to the dump

I'm back in NY for a couple weeks and the rednecks have been at it again despite the snow.

3 pairs of trail posts got torn out and they've been doing donuts on the frozen pond.

In response I have started clearing out dead trees and trees that are growing to close to each other and tying them together with ropes to form barricades.

My step brother runs a snow plowing business so I paid him to come plow the road down to the nature preserve. It's an unmaintained dirt road down right next to a paved road so it had a big pile of snow in front of it which had to get moved first.

Then he plowed the whole road down to the property.

Then he made a 4-5 foot tall snow pile blocking the entrance to the property to stop ATVs and snowmobiles.

You can see the posts there from the old gate that got stolen, lol

Then Anomaly and snek came to help build more barriers. :D

I dropped some trees that were already dead or growing too close to each other. (Proper forest management is important!) Then we tied them all together with ropes, covered the knots in snow, and played catch with a 2500 foot ball of twine.

There are now 4 of these barriers on the property in addition to the snow wall.

Today my mom and I went up to the Wetfish nature preserve. She had never seen the property, so we went for a walk together.

While walking around the property I did an assessment of the barriers. There were fresh tire tracks in the snow outside of the property. It looks like somebody was riding around on an ATV yesterday, trying to get into the property. It was very satisfying to see all of the places where they approached the barriers and then turned around.

Here's an updated map!

Changelog:
- The cleaning crew did a good job of consolidating nearly all of the garbage on the property
- Most of the trail posts were ripped out and the gates were stolen
- Only one pair of trail posts remains, because they simply drove around it lol
- Lots of tree barriers added
- Some of the tree barriers around the perimeter have existed for months but were not previously listed
- Temporary snow barrier added

Ooooo, ghost pipe! That's actually a parasitic plant that steals nutrients from the roots of other plants and only sends up shoots to flower. It's lost its ability to produce chlorophyll altogether, which is why it's white. I've seen them around the woods here, usually a few days after a good rain.

Only one of the trails-- the center trail-- has seen consistent usage in our absence. The Western trail has a formidable series of barriers which the ATV riders have yet to fuck with. The Eastern trail has filled in with all of the water from the storms this summer and the reeds have started to grow sideways, filling in the old trail.

Upgraded barriers along the center trail:
