My machine's a macOS 10.13 "High Sierra" from Early 2011 and for the font-family in this website it doesn't have anything (nor the usual "substitute another font") for anything beyond Unicode 10.0 (June 2017)

"Broken" means that you can't preview any post that includes emojis, but I guess you can post them if you don't use the preview feature. YOLO

This is being caused by a utf8mb4 / latin1 encoding issue. We just discovered this after moving to the new prod server. Working on a fix

I have the images here on Linux. But my macOS only went up to Unicode 10.0.

kanji or hanji 漢字 (Chinese characters), romanji ローマ字 (Roman or Latin characters). So for a written language that uses ideagraphs, it's natural to put more ideas into graphics, like emoji 絵文字 (emotion characters).

The idea got popular in Japan and China were they used SMS texting way more than we did. It was cheaper to make one phone + software for both sides of the Pacific ocean, and one SMS protocol, so 絵文字 were added to American celphones as a bonus. And Americans started using them.
