Title: The Body Horror of Forced Cybernetics
Post by: Diabolizer on November 29, 2025, 10:40:49 pm
When I was around the age of 5, my dad would take me to a school for special needs students in Broomfield.  On our way there, he'd listen to the radio news on NPR where the anchors mentioned "headlines" a lot.  I didn't know what headlines were, but I had imagined children that had "headlines" surgically installed.  I saw these as skinny light bars coming out of the skull, hence headlines.  The news reporters were the parents of these children and were so horrified by what had been done that they shared stories about headlines as a part of the penance.  This was in about 1984.

I don't don't know what inspired those thoughts at the time, but recent media has made me reflect on the idea cybernetic modification that happens against ones will.  While this may seem like the kind of idea that's confined to fiction, there are some (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pizza_bomber) stories (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organ_theft) that aren't too far off (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-30273994) (never mind the experiments ran by the Nazis and other militaries).

So what thoughts does the subject inspire in you?  What stories do you have to share?  Feel free to discuss both how this is represented in the media and the potential for it happening in real life.
