Title: Burning Man discussion thread
Post by: rachel on February 18, 2017, 03:32:19 pm
Fly Geyser, also known as Fly Ranch Geyser is a man-made small geothermal geyser located in Washoe County, Nevada. Fly Geyser is approximately 5 feet (1.5 m) high, by 12 feet (3.7 m) wide, counting the mound on which it sits.

The source of the Fly Geyser field's heat is attributed to a very deep pool of hot rock where tectonic rifting and faulting are common. Fly Geyser was accidentally created during well drilling in 1964 while exploring for sources of geothermal energy.

They actually increased the distance the crowd has to be from the fire because of that. They even have a dedicated team of rangers now that patrol around the man to prevent anybody running into the man in the future.

I was at a ranger meeting a couple weeks ago so I got to learn all about how security works at the event.

I honestly almost killed myself. If it wasn't for rangers, a stranger, and firefighters getting me off of the temple when I was trying to jump, I wouldn't be alive right now. I'm so thankful for them. I wish I knew who they were. I had taken acid and drank almost a whole bottle of whiskey when someone who I thought I was friends with told me otherwise. My fucked up mind could only think of jumping off the tallest thing I could find. This was the same night that the man ran into the burning man.

I ... lived through the cataclysm; I was one of those who didn't get out in time. I sat through the dust on Tuesday and Wednesday, watching firsthand from the cab of the crane truck. I watched as everything got buried and generally destroyed. Waves of blinding white alkali scratched over the cab as my truck reeled with each blinding gust. Loading anything was out of the question. Trying to sleep in any vehicle was like trying to nap in a Shop Vac -- running. No one could leave. You couldn't see for more than a couple of feet. It was like being incarcerated, against your will and better judgment, in one of the largest expanses of open horizon in North America

But a second approach is better.  Playfully make our spaces off-brand.

I heard a story, a couple of months ago, about a group of men in Black Rock City who would periodically all wear adult diapers, and nothing else, and go from art piece to art piece looking for people who were obviously doing fashion shoots with Burning Man as a backdrop … and get in their pictures. Make sure that every shot they took had a bunch of guys wearing adult diapers in it. And when the angry fashion photographers and models said “get the hell out of our shots!” politely saying “no.”  No, you don’t get to chase citizens of Black Rock City away from the art so that you can model in front of it.  A bunch of guys in adult diapers not only get to be here too, they are in fact living up to our aspirations.

That seems just right.

One particularly brazen recommendation would require Burning Man Project to pay for maintenance of County Road 34, which leads to the event’s entrance. We know of no other instance in the United States where a private entity is required by the federal government to pay for maintenance of a public county road that is also used year-round by residents, tourists, and businesses. In addition, Nevada and Washoe County include a gas tax allocated in part for road repair (which participants have contributed to for 29 years). More importantly, Burning Man Project is already working closely in collaboration with Washoe County to find a more permanent solution for CR34.

Other serious problems with the Draft EIS include BLM recommending nearly 10 miles of K-rail or Jersey barriers installed around the Black Rock City perimeter fence; dumpsters placed in the city and along Gate Road for 80,000 people to deposit their trash, despite our Leave No Trace ethos and track record; and that Burning Man Project contract and pay for a BLM-approved private security company reporting to BLM, to screen for weapons and drugs in all vehicles, and to search participants, vendors, contractors, staff, and volunteers at all points of entry to Black Rock City.

Your approximate location is 6:00 & Echo and will measure approximately 50 feet + by 100 feet. If your dimensions contain a + or - sign, it means your camp is an odd shape.

It wasn’t easy. The playa was an endless expanse of literally nothing but dust. No water, no plants, no life of any kind. A totally inhospitable landscape. And they discovered that brought people much closer together. The event today is brutal by design. Larry says:

“You’re not going to create community unless you struggle with other people […] Because only when you struggle with people, for survival, do you see their soul. One of the reasons we grew is that we took people out in the desert and we made them face survival together. And that took a whole lot of nonsense out of it.”

Burning Man is changing their placement policy, requiring theme camps to be interactive. This essentially forces all of the plug n play camps for rich people to stop acting like gated communities. Boom. Suck a dick rich people. Now you have to hang out with the peasants if you want good placement & guaranteed tickets.

Quote
Until now, standing status was the only criteria for DGS allocation, with theme camps and villages in “good standing” receiving an allocation of tickets, and those not in good standing having their allocations reduced or withheld.

For 2020, we have added camp interactivity level as another DGS allocation criterion. This will reward camps and villages that have satisfied or exceeded Placement’s criteria of interactivity, and will also encourage camps and villages to bring high-quality interactivity to Black Rock City.

A virtual Black Rock City? What does that look like?

In this Multiverse, Black Rock City will be online, and everyone will be welcome to join in. On a virtual playa, there’s no limit to who can participate. Like That Thing in The Desert, we will have costs and will need to create some kind of “ticket.” We’re working out those details and will share them as soon as we can. It won’t be like the BRC we’ve built over the years; we know there’s no substitute for an in-person experience. It will be a new kind of Burn. We want to co-create BRC online with 100,000 participants to share our passions, explore fun new ways to live more sustainably, connect in these challenging times, and take care of one another. We know the community has vast potential to meet the challenges of the world. Let’s do it together. If you want to collaborate, let us know here!

I haven't even bought any of my festival tickets for this summer. I'm assuming they're all cancelled. Maybe they'll be able to go on by the end of the summer, but until we've achieved herd immunity one way or another, I'm assuming there are no festies/burns for the foreseeable future.

While it seems that Burning Man is a niche event, the impact that Burning Man has had on all of our lives is incredible. So many incredible companies have been born out of the creativity of this event.

I have watched tiny art projects turn into big theme camps turn into small businesses and turn into large corporations in the 15 years I’ve been involved in this community.
Burning Man is like a cauldron. It’s like a womb. It’s a cocoon. It’s the place where magic goes to be loved, nurtured, and not judged so that it can be reborn into something that serves the world.

It has been a beautiful model for building an autonomous community. And I believe that at this time so many people are seeking the type of community that Burning Man has built for the past 30+ years.

This is the time for us all to stand together and grow as a larger community. To nurture the seeds that were planted in the desert as we grow them across the globe.

But, although here in the United States we may be feeling the weight lifting and the light at the end of the tunnel brightening, we are still in the pandemic, and the uncertainties that need to be resolved are impossible to resolve in the time we have.

We have decided to set our sights on Black Rock City 2022.

But if you really need your burning man fix, you can still show up in the desert. No roads or portapoties will be provided

Yes, There Still Will Be Visitors in the Black Rock Desert

Some of you will choose to gather, co-create and celebrate Burning Man culture on the playa this year. The Bureau of Land Management says at this time public lands will remain open to the public. Anyone choosing to camp on the playa this year will need to be entirely self-sufficient.

“The participants did an amazing job… that’s why it’s so frustrating for me to hear all this conjecture in the media… It’s really not like that at all. It’s phenomenal out there.”

Quote
Those abandoned vehicles and couches? We hate to see anything left behind, but it’s important to note that there were no more this year than in previous years. “Every year we have to do what we call large abandoned item removal,” Chaos said. It’s a process by which we sweep the city and gather up all the loose objects. This year was a very average year as far as items left behind by camps. We actually had significantly fewer camps that really abandoned a lot of their stuff. In a lot of years we have 10 or 12 problem camps. This year it was only two or three places where a camp clearly just abandoned a bunch of stuff.”

“We have sometimes vehicles that were misplaced, sometimes someone was medevaced or something along those lines, and their car’s still out there. Sometimes a rental vehicle gets abandoned or a trailer, two people don’t agree on who’s picking it up and then nobody picks it up. This year, we probably had about 20 or so vehicles left behind like that… We have been able to successfully get all of those vehicles handled by the owners or the companies that were serving those owners. So there are no remaining unknown vehicles left out there.”
