These pics are the houses of opal miners in Arizona and Australia. Basically they were already digging out these big tunnels to find opals and then they decided to live in them.

Tomorrow I am calling five different companies to ask them about building underground houses. Most of these companies use the technique of excavating the property, building a structure out of a metal frame, covering it in a layer of shotcrete, and then backfilling with soil.

Differences in position and shape of burrow openings of black-tailed prairie dogs create passive ventilation from wind energy by altering air pressure.
Prairie dogs are highly social rodents that build extensive underground burrows in the plains of North America to house their family groups. The burrows can reach 10 m (32 ft) in length, and this size means that diffusion alone is not sufficient to replace used air inside the burrow with fresh air. The way that a prairie dog builds the openings to its burrow, however, helps to harness wind energy from the windy plains and create passive ventilation through the burrow’s tunnels.
As air flows across a surface, a gradient in flow speed forms, where air moves slower the closer it is to the surface. The prairie dog is able to take advantage of this gradient by building a mound with an elevated opening upwind and a mound with a lower opening downwind. Over the elevated opening, wind velocity is faster than it is over the lower opening, creating a local region of low pressure

After several assists from my robotic arm, the mole appears to be underground. It’s been a real challenge troubleshooting from millions of miles away. We still need to see if the mole can dig on its own.
The mole’s now mostly buried, but not yet digging on its own. I’ll be using my arm for a couple other tasks like imaging my solar panels, while I consider other ways to assist, maybe as an earthmover – er, “marsmover” – to push loose soil into the hole.
- One 130 foot (base) diameter power dome building (approximately 13,273 sq ft with the potential to add another story or two) - Three 160 ft tall missile silos approximately 10,000 sq ft each - Two 6 story antenna silos approximately 3000 sq ft each - Three 4 story equipment terminal buildings approximately 6,000 sq ft each - One 100 foot (base) diameter control dome building (approximately 7850 sq ft) - Nearly one half mile of tunnels 9 feet in diameter 40 feet below ground level

Wow, it's not even flooded! Some water damage but surprisingly clean. that would be an awesome compound.

Like the listing says, you'd need a big growing operation or server farm down there to pay operating costs. And tbh I'd want to spend a few mil fixing it up cause it looks like the set of SG-1 but like if all the characters were brutally murdered in episode 1

I've been in one of those Atlas sites before, hell, my grandfather died in one. They're SUPER rusty, wet and i wouldn't touch them without a total refurb.

If you have money, you can just go visit the old missile silos, build a nice home underground elsewhere, and still have a bunch of money left over that you didnt spend trying to renovate an old ruin not really meant for people to live in. For example, there's one of those old missile silos that a guy runs scuba diving tours out of. Apparently it's very cold, but interesting. Trying to remember what show it was on, maybe Abandoned on Vice?

This guy dug a 50 foot deep cavern underneath his house and put a trailer in it. The cavern is so deep that it has water in it. The cool air is used instead of air conditioning in the rest of the house above ground.
