This story is about culling but also eliminating waste.
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/jun/12/fish-leather-lionfish-sustainable-invasive-species

Lionfish have no natural predators outside their native range and are all-consuming, devouring an estimated 79% of young marine life within five weeks of entering a coral reef system. ... So Chavda and a team of ecologically aware fellow scuba enthusiasts decided to act by establishing Inversa, which turns lionfish into a new product: fish leather. ... Fish skin is thin but because the fibre structure runs crossways, it is stronger than many other types of leather.

Very cool idea creating market demand for a product produced by killing an invasive species. It's like the opposite of the beaver fur trade

I've heard about companies mining metals from the deep ocean but I haven't heard about activists stopping the mining activities. I would be interested to read that story! Can you post a link? 😊

It doesn't say it in this article, but there is boycott, divest, oppose movments going on. Basically, the strategy is to tell the public and consumers about the companies involved and out them for supporting something that would do damage to the environment. It's a strategy used to get contractors to pull contracts and stifle projects. (Ive been seeing some climate initiatives pop up in my feed on the ctp insta). However, in this article, it discusses more regarding the local parliamentary politics.

love the idea of incentivising lionfish hunting! did it turn into anything more than a cool idea?

also re deep sea mining:
we just found out there's a whole ecosystem under the seafloor that we hadn't seen before, so yeah maybe we shouldn't be mining in new areas until we know for sure it won't be an extinction event or something
