Here's a higher quality half-speed version of one of the videos posted earlier, so you can really appreciate the way those buildings get torn up like something out of Akira

you know I grew up watching akira and seeing giant explosions in anime but I never realized how accurate those depictions really were

Yeah, I've seen the Beirut explosion compared to Akira a lot (in nerdy places) which is why I used the same example. The animators did their research, and it shows.

Speaking of Japanese things, yesterday was the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima.



"Little Boy" was ~13-15kT. The Beirut explosion is being estimated at a little over one kT.

This one is the 2015 Tainjin Explosion, possibly caused by ammonium nitrate like the Lebanon one?

And today, the 75th anniversy of the bombing of Nagasaki.



"Fat Man" was ~21kT, though did less damage to Nagasaki overall because the city is within a valley, and the hills absorbed a lot of the physical blast energy.
