The year before "Dragon's Lair," Sega showed off a laserdisc game at a trade show that used spliced footage from three sci-fi movies.  The same year as Dragon's Lair, Stern offered a game called "Cliff Hanger" that also used cartoon art.  If you've been watching anime with us monday nights, you'll recognize the protagonist of this laserdisc game.
