A permablitz is a gathering of permaculture enthusiasts working together to GET SHIT DONE.

This weekend Kakama had a permablitz in her back yard!!!

Kakama had a bunch of really big, 50-80 year old invasive Siberian Elm trees growing in her back yard. Apparently the mormons planted them along river banks when they first settled the area "because they grow fast" "to prevent erosion" and now they're everywhere. She had to pay like $20,000 to have a tree service company cut all of them down because they kept on dropping branches on her house and garage. They already hauled off a couple truckloads full of giant logs, but there were still more left over. I convinced her to use the rest of them to build hugels in her back yard.

We started on Thursday afternoon by demolishing the old shed that the trees had fallen onto. Tearing off the shingles, unscrewing the boards and stacking them in a lumber pile, and moving what logs we could by hand to make pathways. Up until this point the ENTIRE yard was completely full of shit and you couldn't even walk around without stepping over piles of debris...

Friday afternoon we continued cleaning things up by hand and started planning out where the hugels should go. We decided they should be oriented from east to west, so one side of the hugels would be south facing and the other north facing. Saturday morning I woke up to a picture from Kakama of a mini-excavator she rented and 10 of her local friends & neighbors all helped dig giant trenches and fill them with logs. Then we had a big campfire to celebrate 🎉 🏕️ 🔥
