How long should inactive matrix users remain connected?
« on: December 28, 2022, 10:30:14 am »
We've officially upgraded the matrix server to the latest version of synapse and migrated to a beefy dedicated server. Now it's time to start thinking about pruning inactive users. How long should we allow users to idle on the network without logging into their accounts?

Currently over 75 users on FishNet are connected via matrix, however only half of them actually use their accounts on a regular basis. There are several people who have signed up for accounts, chatted for a day or two, and then never return. What should be done with these inactive users?

Discuss!

3 months seems really generous if they've already been inactive for months

This thread is to determine the amount of time that a user is allowed to be inactive before their account is automatically pruned going forward. We won't add any additional time from now, we will use the results of the poll and say "anyone who hasn't logged in since X months ago will be removed"

It's not going to be 3 months from now, or 6 months from now, it will be "any account who has been inactive for this amount of time"

for context, the Freenode IRC network would purge any username registration after 45 days of inactivity
